Ég lít
fyrst og fremst á mig sem portrettmálara þó að ég máli ýmislegt
annað. Í raun þykir mér ekki svo ýkja mikill munur á portrettinu
og öðrum gerðum málverka því að ég mála í því augnamiði að fanga
hið einstaka við hvert það efni sem ég nota í verkum mínum, þrátt
fyrir að það fyrirfinnist í hundruðum útgáfa. Ég hef mikinn
áhuga á portrettmálun, hvernig draga má upp mynd af einstaklingum
og nýta aldagamla hefð, hvernig portrett lýsir stundum einungis
andliti en á öðrum tíma segir það okkur áhugaverða sögu,
endurskapar jafnvel söguleg augnablik eða gefur vísbendingu um
sálfræðilega flóknar aðstæður.
Though I do paint other things, I consider myself first and foremost a portrait painter. Actually, I feel there isn’t such a difference between portraits and other types of paintings, because in every instance I try to capture the uniqueness of the subject at hand, although it may exist in many versions. I am captivated by portrait painting; how pictures portray individuals while invoking a tradition that goes back many centuries. Sometimes portraits only describe faces, other times they tell us interesting stories, recount great events or hint at complex psychological situations.
